The idea is that the Reporter would stand out of the way in front of the cave or closest tree, semi-hidden from the actual events.
The fire would be near the center of the frame when its mentioned so I tried to place it in a clearing.

The experiment was done in a field with a shed, I don't think there's much to design than the shed and characters.
More research is needed for the shed so that it looks more of its era, I went for a barn-like appearance but that may not be suitable for the times, searching for a shed of the time seemed to be a bit of a challenge.

We probably don't want a fully realistic ship interior, there be so much to model and it would be rather complex. I think a more studio version would make more sense, like we go for the style of scifi of the era it had a simple clear design to it.
