Premise So Far

The Initial Idea

The original idea was to design and model some beasts, to make it interesting was to create a form of Beastiary.
I am particularly interested in the modelling of creatures, I want to challenge myself, to try and create an interesting creature and rig it to move in a way that seems right for the creature.

The start was to get ideas from scribbles, to give a form of 'randomness' to them, as trying to draw shapes ended with the same ovular shapes, they all seemed very similar

After several conversations, it seemed to become more documentary-like, following a creatures day and the threats it usually faces, predators and the hunt for food.

Concepts

A handful of the scribbled creatures had been selected to be developed further, the 'Chubby Squid' being the Hero creature with the most focus. Having some creatures meant I needed to decide how they will interact, whos the Predator and who is Prey.

Having some creatures meant I needed to decide how they will interact, who's the Predator and who is Prey.

Colour

The whole world colour scheme is based on two variants of the 'Chubby Squid', number 3 and 4, each creature will have at least one of these colours in their colour scheme.

So far its murky brown water and a bright blue sky, with greenish bioluminescence in plants and bugs, as well as the creatures.
A possible form of aurora, making the sky more vibrant, its possible that this is the form of day on this world

The 'Chubby Squid'

The 'Hero' creature, though slightly simple in design it is meant to appear cute, to allow the viewer to fall in love with the character as much as possible, and to make the viewer route for it.

Also known as 'Gas Bags' these squidlike creatures are air-filled, allowing them to float up the top of the water quickly, as well as burp bubbles when it's happy.

The movement of its neck is questionable but after research, I discovered that its structure was much like the 'cutefish' from the game subnautica.

Though its body may be similar I'm not sure if the motions I've had in mind are the same, although the model itself gives ideas of how to build to get the neck to work.

The 'Multi-Mouths'

An eat everything it can fit into its mouth Predator, the Multi-Mouths have three mouths, each inside one and other.

Their eyes similar to Scallops.
There are many of them but they do not have the same colour, they are solid black in the Multi-Mouths and are not seen moving, The purpose of this is to not know which way they are looking, and as their senses are different what they can actually see is different for each set.
When each mouth is open it means a different thing, each has a different set of eyes;
- When all mouths are closed it is in a dormant state, able to detect changes in light to keep itself hidden from any of its own predators, if any.
- When the first mouth is open, it is active, it also reveals its eyes that are able to detect colour, this ability allows them to swim around focusing on light and colour to see where it is.
- When the second mouth is open, it's hunting, this layer reveals motions detecting eyes allowing it to track prey.
- When the third mouth is open, it is eating, there is nothing beyond this point, seeing this creature with its third mouth wide open means there is little hope for whatever is in front of it.
Unless it can outsmart this sharp mouthed beast.
The 'Striders'

Large Beasts, with shelled backs and hard heads.
Given the nickname 'Striders' due to their large legs that keep most of them out of the water.
Their heads have a dent in them to help them push large objects, like trees and boulders in their way.
Despite the strength to push boulders, I wanted to try and give these creatures some elegance.
Their bodies are soft but have a hard shell to protect themselves from the weather and as a site of safety for smaller creatures able to reach its back.
From this I knew I liked the head shape, a few small alterations are probably needed to make it look more solid

When I was struggling to think of Ideas I turned to Maya
seeing what might work and what might not.
This mouth has potential but the corners of the mouth in this rough rig don't seem quite right, but the middle of it does.

This gave me a form of stepping stone of an idea.
Maybe have the mouth not be like a hinge but more of a two-part opening system, like the middle moves first then the rest of it.

Thinking over it again I decided to try and sketch mesh onto the creature, then focus on how the eyes would interact with the rest of the mesh.
The next step from here is to go back to modelling. A second shot, but this time also considering how the mouth opens.
I would imagine the 'fangs' are just for show, and they are herbivores,
this could explain why the area has almost barren trees, as the creature has eaten a lot and is about to migrate to a more lush environment, allowing this area they're in to regrow.

Other Creatures?

The creature in the centre would be called a 'Froth' a mix of a sloth and frog, it would have many babies which hop around as youngsters, but as they near adulthood they slow down and find a comfortable, safe place to nest, clinging to plants above the water they sit and watch.
The elders of this species have not moved in so long they have moss and other plant life growing on them.

Leafeel a pet to the 'Chubby Squid'
They are aggressive like dogs, but have been 'tamed' by the 'Chubby Squids' so will try to protect the species.
The introduction to them could be presented like a horror scene, but quickly changes as the scale of the eel is brought to light and it goes to cuddle up with the squid.

I imagine their 'leaves' could be a little like axolotls, in appearance, but matching how plantlife could look like in the world.

So far the environment shown is a swampland of sorts with deep water.
The trees are near barren as the Striders have eaten most of the vegetation up high, their still alive roots still visible deep into the water.
Below the surface of the water there are jellyfish like plants that float in the water, mainly harmless but some variants can have spikes on them for leeching off prey.

Rocks and rubble are everywhere but there are also a few holes in the ground, deep hiding places for the Multi-Mouths, as well as seaweed, because their exteriors are a similar colour to the dirt on the ground they can blend in pretty well.
Rocks can be held up by roots and other plantlife.

I need to focus on plant design as its not properly been explored yet, the exploration will require looking into current sea plants and editing them to be a little more, there will be variations of sea anemone too as these look alien enough as it is, but there may be other plants that are close enough to being alien that will only need a few adjustments.

I will also need to look into modelling vines of sorts, this may focus on variations of the 'tail and tentacle' rig, which I've looked at the basics of this week, adjusted to wobble to be more plantlike, so I might need to have parts be negative or mix up what effects what like X controlling Y.

More research for the area in the following posts, more is required.
