How I Approach and Create Illustrations (with a Focus on Storytelling)
that was at 10:30 - 11:30     Presented by Djamila Knopf
My Notes from this

Illustrations require research

Start with the open questions and research using google translates translations to get more accurate results for specific cultures.
A pose and possible diagram to show ideas to get to a more story-based illustration.

Solve problems by looking a little at others work, not copying directly but by taking in how they do some parts.

always thumbnail, add detail and more detail slowly build up to a final image.

breaks are good to see mistakes and things that are needed to be fixed.

using tools to help are not 'cheating' it is a useful tool.

make sure the eye is drawn to the right part of the image.

Emotional Resonance - one person's story can remind another of their own

connections are the essence of storytelling.

start simple - who what where

References are very important

start with colour for shading adds vibrance

Developing style comes naturally but also picked up from looking at others work
doodles can show natural tendencies in personal drawing, ask others what pops up frequently.

subject matter can also be style.

pricing - hourly rates? higher than minimum wage, the skill and time, compared to standard industry rates.

Also Attended

There may not be notes but just watching the people talk and work was interesting.

that was at 09:00 - 10:00    Presented by Jonathan Cheetham

Life Drawing (standing pose)
that was at 10:00 - 10:30    Presented by Vanessa Abreu
This task reminded me I need to do a lot more practice with humans, I might start online life drawing again to get back into the habit.
As that was only 15 minutes or so I also caught the second half of

Master Gravity Sketch for Concept Modeling
that was at 10:00 - 10:30    Presented by Glen Southern from SouthernGFX

Vr 3d Modeling, interesting but I'm going to be unable to attempt something like this for years,
although actually seeing a 3d model in virtual reality seems amazing.

It's stepping through the looking glass into the world you've created.

Texturing a Cyberpunk-Style Character in Substance Painter
that was at 13:45 - 14:30    Presented by Wes McDermott from Adobe

An interesting show of what Substance Painter can do, with realistic skin textures made of multiple stacked layers.

Managing Your Mental Bandwidth

“Frankensteining” - A Digital Human Challenge

How To Make Colour Choices
that was at 18:30 - 19:30    Presented by Angela Sung

Finding passion in your work helps you focus on stuff.
Learning to paint traditionally helps you learn colour mixing.

Angela Sung's process
she pushes the differences between warmths and cols
using a reference image

she likes to push perspectives a bit.

everything is roughed out but not detailed

she uses the lasso tool to get a base colour
then adds the sky
then adds light and darks still in blocks
Figure out the colour relationships here
and then slowly builds up details

if you're working too zoomed in, zoom out to take a look at the whole picture
this helps show how the colours interact.

shading needs some detail otherwise it might look like a sticker.

you can add stuff to an image drawn from reference to make it more lived in.

continuously zooming in and out, comparing the whole image to itself.

Remember glossy surfaces reflections for light.

as well as adding a lived-in feel, add things from memory of a certain place can help give the drawing a certain vibe of a place or theme.

Railings help with scale.

A noise filter can help give texture to a piece.

Photoshop layer format (perhaps as folders):
Foreground
Midground
Background
Sky

muddy images maybe just due to colour warmth.

Make sure you tell people what you want to do, to help get yourself into that line of work.

Life Drawing (portrait)
that was at 21:00 - 21:30    Presented by Vanessa Abreu
I believe I left too much space between the nose and the chin on the face making it look a little strange.

I found there was a little too much for one day, so I plan on going to the on-demand versions of:
